We found the camera and ate doughnuts.

March 25, 2012

The brief summer weather has left again, and it’s cool and raining here as we head into the last full week of Lent. Incidentally, Tuesday is your next opportunity to help advance Mary Magdalene to the next round. She will be up against Evelyn Underhill who is pretty cool (I will admit to being unfamiliar with her prior to Lent Madness), but not as cool as Mary M., at least in the highly esteemed opinions of my personal experts .

We found the camera. Much rejoicing was had (also: celebratory doughnuts. We get doughnuts maybe twice a year and they are typically reserved for Big Things. Like we had doughnuts the morning we told them Sam was on the way, and they still talk about that. We should have doughnuts more often, although for the record no one asked if I was pregnant when we ate these doughnuts).

The misplaced camera: all me, not the baby as previously blamed. But now I know what’s on all our bookshelves and under the couch.

And we know that I should probably completely clean off my desk. It was kind of wedged under something. I sense a personal decluttering challenge coming on.

Moving on.

I’m thinking about canning this week, because I’m trying not to get too excited about my garden, yet. Our tulips poked out a bit of green, but I’m sure we won’t see too much more of it this week. My yard is mainly a mess, of mud, items being repurposed as toys (did you know we have a spider trap in our front bushes? it has even, on occasion, caught spiders.), and more mud. We’re also decluttering, and have a big box ready for the consignment store and one for goodwill. This will be a two-items a day week in our household (hopefully more, some days).

My little mini-project for this week is to try making some tiny batches of hot sauce. I loved  the one we made last year , but want to play around a bit this year. I may make some more of it, and I’d like to find one with roasted peppers as a base. Do you have a hot sauce recipe that you love?

I’m also starting to make a list of recipes I’ve pinned and bookmarked to think of what I definitely want to try. Right now, these fire-roasted tomatoes are on the list, and this blueberry-maple syrup(although it is going to be a rotten year for maple syrup, from all indications– all that hot weather made the trees set buds. So that one may get tabled….we’ll have to see. I may buy a gallon of last year’s syrup if I still can, though, and I bet it would work for this….) I’m also going to try this bbq sauce, which involves long, slow cooking of peels/cores/etc. from making tomato sauce.

Actually, my big hope is to get through the week with no ear infections, but we’ll see about that. Sam is feeling better but he got a nasty medicine this time (the last time he was on an antibiotic, it apparently tasted good– we would just put tiny amounts on a metal spoon and he would lick it like a cat. this time, not so much, unless you kind of imagine a wet cat, hopped up on a hallucinatory drug, spitting at you.) Fun times, fun times.
